That morning, local villager Zaw Zaw says he woke at his parents’ home in Myauk Khin Yan to the sound of gunfire. A Myanmar military jet flies overhead after bombing the quarters of Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF), in Kayah state, Myanmar on July 6, 2022. Following the executions, Zaw Zaw said the militia “locked down” the village and threatened to kill those who left. Multiple villagers who spoke to CNN consistently said Myauk Khin Yan has been a militia stronghold since the 2021 coup. Phoe Ei Thu, 17, lost her leg to a landmine while fleeing Myauk Khin Yan in early January.

Export manufacturing and other mainstream business activities in Myanmar have suffered since the military takeover, wiping out jobs that millions relied on to get by. The economy is forecast to grow at a meager 1% pace this year and about half the population is estimated to be living in poverty. Fighting with pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic minority armed groups has escalated in recent months, raising pressure on the military, which has suffered some key defeats. However, United Nations officials estimate that nearly 18 million of the country's nearly 57 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. The Myanmar military administration reported $602 million in foreign direct investment last year, mostly in the energy sector, with only $112 million invested in manufacturing.

CNN —Nicole Randol — a Missouri-based mother of two boys, ages 6 and 10 — recently posted a message on a popular Facebook parenting group about Robux, the virtual gaming currency for the platform Roblox: Target was having a 40%-off sale for Robux. “I expect it to be the most exciting thing they open [on Christmas],” Randol, who bought two $100 Robux cards, told CNN. Gaming subscriptions continue to gain popularity, too. “What’s changed, naturally, is the games that families are playing.”According to ESA, more than 212 million Americans play video games on a regular basis. Still, with the rise of subscriptions and gaming currency, what lands under the Christmas tree may be smaller in size than years before.

The change – first reported by tech site 9to5Mac – will add features, such as read receipt, typing indicators, better support for group chats and higher quality media sharing of images and videos, across platforms. Apple told CNN in a statement it will add support for the standard, called RCS (Rich Communication Services), later next year. Meanwhile, Google, which already has support for RCS within its messaging app, has been vocal about wanting Apple to adopt the standard. The move, however, doesn’t necessarily mean the green bubbles (Android or other users) and blue bubbles (Apple users) that are displayed when messaging someone on the other platform will go away anytime soon. “Instead, RCS support will enable a smoother and better customer experience of iPhone users communicating across platforms.

Introduced in 1998 when Netflix first launched, the DVD service promised an easier rental experience than having to drive to the nearest Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. McEvoy has remained faithful to Netflix’s DVD service so he can keep watching Bollywood and obscure independent films not often found on streaming services. Bill Rouhana, the CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment – which owns DVD rental service Redbox – told The Hollywood Reporter in April he hoped to purchase Netflix’s DVD business. Still, he said, he’s “sad” to see Netflix’s DVD service depart. “I absolutely would not have been able to find all of those movies [I’ve watched] if not for the Netflix DVD service,” he said.

REUTERS/Marco Garcia Acquire Licensing RightsSept 5 (Reuters) - Hawaiian Holdings Inc (HA.O), the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, said on Tuesday that its third-quarter revenue had been trending positively but was reversed after the West Maui wildfire affected travel demand. Hawaiian Airlines is among the major customers that took delivery of the affected A320neo jets, according to aviation data provider Cirium. The State of Hawaii has currently discouraged non-essential travel to West Maui through October, the company said. Hawaiian expects its operating revenue per seat mile for the current quarter to be down 4% to 7%, from earlier guidance for a reduction of 2% to 5%.

CNN —A slew of viral conspiracy videos on social media have made baseless claims that the Maui wildfires were started intentionally as part of a land grab, highlighting how quickly misinformation spreads after a disaster. Still, conspiracy theories continue to circulate as nearly 400 people are still unaccounted for. It’s not uncommon for conspiracy theories to make the rounds after a national crisis. Social media platform X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. That means posts sharing conspiracy theories that spark fear and emotion may perform better in a crisis than those sharing straightforward, accurate information.

CNN —New images of the sun’s surface captured by a powerful ground-based solar telescope have revealed sunspots and other features in unprecedented detail. The eight images, released on May 19, were taken using the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, a 4-meter (13.1-foot) telescope located on the island of Maui in Hawaii. Although the sun is becoming increasingly active as the July 2025 solar maximum — the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle — draws closer, the photos showcase the quieter aspects of the solar surface. Bright hot plasma flows upward on the sun’s surface, while darker, cooler plasma flows down. NSF/AURA/NSOThe Inouye Solar Telescope also glimpsed “light bridges,” bright solar features that span the darkest region of a sunspot.
The sun looks spooky and mysterious in new images from the world's most powerful solar telescope. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope has been observing the sun from the Hawaiian island of Maui since it first opened in 2020. Its first video, below, showed roiling solar plasma, each cell the size of Texas. Dark "pores" on the solar surface indicate powerful magnetic fields, which are likely driving the dark threads visible in the atmosphere above. The bright yellow surface plasma cools until its density is so low that it drops below the surface, through the dark lanes between cells.
A new report raises even more concerns about Sen. Dianne Feinstein's health. True, Feinstein's health is the topic du jour in Washington. Byrd, Thurmond, and Cochran all faced unflattering stories that virtually mirror what's been written about Feinstein. The last time the Senate actually expelled a member was in 1862 when it booted out 14 senators for supporting the Confederacy. The biggest power Feinstein's colleagues and critics can wield is shame.

CNN —Just a few days ahead of its product launch, Google unveiled an early look at its first foldable smartphone. In a video posted to Twitter and YouTube, the company teased a Pixel phone with a vertical hinge that can be opened to reveal a tablet-like display. According to ABI Research, foldable and flexible displays made up about 0.7% of the smartphone market in 2021, and in 2022 expected to fall just shy of 2%. CNN —One of the buzziest songs recently circulating on TikTok and climbing the Spotify charts featured the familiar voices of best-selling artists Drake and the Weeknd. But there’s a twist: Drake and the Weeknd appear to have had nothing to do with it. The viral track, “Heart on my Sleeve,” comes from an anonymous TikTok user named Ghostwriter977, who claims to have used artificial intelligence to generate the voices of Drake and the Weeknd for the track. The original TikTok video has seemingly been taken down, and the song has since been removed from streaming services including YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify. Taryn Southern’s debut song “Break Free,” which was composed and produced with AI, hit the Top 100 radio charts back in 2018, and VAVA, an AI music artist (i.e.
That, at least, is the vision emerging from a growing number of states introducing — and in some cases passing — legislation intended to protect kids online. Now, in the absence of federal legislation, states are taking action, and raising some alarms in the process. On the surface, providing more guardrails for teens is a step forward that some parents may welcome after years of worrying about the potential harms kids face on social media. “Not all parents are passionate, kind and supportive of their kids, and even the ones who are don’t have the capacity or time to deal with the 24/7 nature of social media,” said Heitner. “It’s an unfair burden.”Enforcement issuesGiven that the bills are unprecedented, it’s unclear how exactly social media companies will adapt and enforce it.
As part of the bill, called the Utah Social Media Regulation Act, social media platforms will have to conduct age verification for all Utah residents, ban all ads for minors and impose a curfew, making their sites off limits between the hours of 10:30 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. for anyone under the age of 18. The bill will also require social platforms to give parents access to their teens’ accounts. “Social media provides a lifeline for many young people, in addition to community, education, and conversation,” said Jason Kelley, director of activism at the EFF. Given that the bill is unprecedented, it’s unclear how exactly the social media companies will adapt. Inouye said minors could “steal” identities – such as from family members who don’t use social media – to create accounts that they can access and use without oversight.
OpenAI is opening up access to its ChatGPT tool to third-party businesses, paving the way for the viral AI chatbot to be integrated into numerous apps and services. Instacart, Snap and tutor app Quizlet are among the early partners experimenting with adding ChatGPT. The initial batch of companies tapping into OpenAI’s API each have slightly different visions for how to incorporate ChatGPT. Dating website OkCupid has already experimented with using ChatGPT to write matching questions. Some school systems, such as in New York and Seattle, banned the use of ChatGPT in the classroom over concerns about students cheating.
“The Learjet pilot read back the instructions clearly but began a takeoff roll instead,” the FAA said in a statement. The NTSB says neither airplane was damaged and nobody on board was hurt. The FedEx plane, meanwhile, climbed as its crew aborted their landing to help avoid a collision, the FAA said. Air traffic controllers had “noticed another aircraft crossing the runway in front of the departing jetliner,” the FAA said in a statement. Audio recordings detail swift action by an air traffic controller kept the airplanes from colliding as they drew closer.
Twenty people who were on a Hawaiian Airlines flight near Honolulu suffered significant injuries when the jetliner bucked violently in a patch of turbulent air Sunday, officials said. The aircraft was at capacity, with 278 passengers, eight flight attendants and two pilots on board, when the incident shook it enough to damage interior panels and cause head injuries for multiple people, Hawaiian Airlines officials said. Flight 35 was at a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet when it hit the patch, Hawaiian Airlines Chief Operating Officer Jon Snook said at a news conference Sunday. Fasten seat belt lights were on at the time, but at least some of the injured were not restrained properly, airlines officials said. Such a level of turbulence has not affected a Hawaiian Airlines flight since the century began, Snook said.
Officials downgraded the alert level for Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano from a warning to a watch on Saturday as they predict that the eruption of the world's largest active volcano could soon end. "High eruption rates will not resume based on past eruptive behavior and current behavior suggests that the eruption may end soon," the U.S. Geological Survey said in a bulletin issued Saturday. The new alert level reflects "the limited hazards associated with the current activity," the latest update states. Its eruption began Nov. 27, marking its first eruption since 1984 and prompting warnings from officials that residents stay alert. Before the most recent eruption, geologists had recorded 33 eruptions since 1843, making Mauna Loa among the world’s most active volcanoes.
Hawaii volcano alert level lowered to watch - USGS

Dec 10 (Reuters) - Lava and volcanic gas emissions at Hawaii's Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, declined on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. As a result, the Observatory downgraded the alert level for the volcano to a watch from the previous level of warning, with lava confined to a small area. Under a watch alert level, an eruption is underway but poses limited hazards. Mauna Loa began erupting in late November for the first time since 1984, ending its longest quiet period in recorded history. The behavior of the volcano suggests the eruption may end soon.
People watch lava from the Mauna Loa volcano on Dec. 1, 2022, near Hilo, Hawaii. If lava does cross the highway, the Hawaii National Guard can help plan for alternatives and try to set up bypass routes, the governor said. Cars wait in traffic along Saddle Road, with occupants waiting to view the Mauna Loa volcano on Thursday. Mauna Loa, which means “Long Mountain,” covers half the island, according to the USGS. It is one of six volcanoes in Hawaii, according to the agency.

REUTERS/Go NakamuraDec 2 (Reuters) - The lava flowing from Hawaii's Mauna Loa, which is the world's largest active volcano and erupted this week, is edging closer to the Big Island's main highway. But the USGS also said that because of the unpredictable nature of lava flows, it's "difficult to estimate when or if the flow will impact" the highway, which is the island's main east- west road. On flatter ground, lava flows spread out and "inflate" - creating individual lobes that can advance quickly and then stall. Mauna Loa rises 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above the Pacific Ocean, part of a chain of volcanoes that formed the islands of Hawaii.
For many in the Native Hawaiian community, it carried a larger cultural and political symbolism and a message to respect Indigenous communities and land. Many Native Hawaiians are drawing from their mythology around Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and creator of the islands, to help assign meaning to the historic eruption. “You don’t have authority to shape our sacred lands.”The eruption, Ing said, “is Pelehonuamea saying, ‘They’re right. And Pele’s lava flow, ho’omanawanui said, is associated with a cleansing that the Native Hawaiian community receives with gratitude rather than fear. So now Pele is coming in.”The symbolism around the eruption can also be applied to another lasting colonial force on the island: the tourism industry, Ing said.
